September Is National Lymphoma, Leukemia, And Myeloma Month:   September 15 also is Worldwide Lymphoma Awareness Day:  “Blood cancers are severally underpublicized considering that nearing a million people in American are living with blood cancer and every six minutes someone dies from lymphoma, leukemia, and myeloma.  Awareness is critical because receiving a prompt and proper diagnosis saves lives and because it attracts funding for critical research” says Chicago Blood Cancer Foundation CEO Charlene McMann.  Our “Out For Blood Team” is participating in a bike ride on Sunday, September 18 and that is a terrific way for people to raise important awareness and funding for cancer research.  Watch for our appearances on NBC 5, HLN, and in the Daily Herald.  Join us as we pedal for a cure.

Promising New Leukemia Treatment & Possible Cure For CLL: Researchers engineered a patient's own immune cells to treat a type of blood cancer called chronic lymphocytic leukemia, or CLL. "The clinical doctor involved in this was astonished and so were the patients that a single infusion of the cells could have such pronounced anti-tumor effects in the patients," Dr. June says. So far all 3 patients - who had incurable leukemia and no other options - are doing well about a year after treatment.

Special Message from Charlene McMann, CEO Co-Founder

When Scott and I decided to start CBCF I thought it would be a great idea to put a person's name on the research grants with the hospitals we have partnered with.  After Scott finished his treatments,  I knew I had to do something in his name in honor of him because of all he had gone through, surgery at Rush University Medical Center and chemo and radiation at Loyola Medical Center.  I did a letter writing campaign and raised money to put Scott's name on a research grant with Loyola University Medical Center (Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center) where he had his treatments.  I took this idea and we will be doing the same with CBCF in honor or memory of people that have been touched by blood cancer in some way.  We will be coordinating this effort with the money we raise for research.  Contact us for details.

Advocacy Lane:
RIT Watch:  Last fall, GlaxoSmithKline announced reduction in Bexxar production.  In July, CMS issued its proposed ruling on Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement.  CMS proposed rule continues to under-reimburse RIT and, thereby, negatively impacts patient access to this treatment.  RIT has proven to be effective for some patients with follicular lymphomas and has other potential indications.  Chicago Blood Cancer Foundation advocates have been active in attempting to remedy the situation.  Although CMS failed to remedy the situation, Chicago Blood Cancer Foundation advocates remain engaged on the issue.  Here is a link to an article that explains the CMS reimbursement issue.  http://www.examiner.com/cancer-in-chicago/the-government-must-stop-limiting-access-to-a-life-saving-cancer-treatment

Learn more about RIT by listening to a special "Battling and Beating Cancer" Radio show on RIT with one of the pioneers of RIT, Dr. Mark Kaminski. [Click Here]

NIH/NCI Cancer Research Funding:  Thanks to all of the Chicago Blood Cancer Foundation advocates that have been engaged in the efforts to increase federal funding for cancer research!
